This one took 4 days to create. I've been enjoying CS4. It's far more stable than CS3. It hasn't crashed at all. Works smoothly, except that I've not been able to get the OpenGL features to work. I'm not sure if this is due to my graphics card or operating system.

I was also playing with the 3D features and the 3D axis is not visible, even though I've selected it in the View menu. A mystery I need to figure out soon because I'll be teaching Photoshop at the college in April and need to be able to demonstrate how all these features work.

If you'd like to read more about the process I used to make this you can read more on my blog: galefraney.wordpress.com/2009/02/

Happy Update
Miraculously, The OpenGL features have begun working, along with the 3D Axis tool. I’m not certain what caused this because I did a number of different things while trying to troubleshoot the problem. I went to the NVIDIA website to update my Video card driver. You can choose an option to have the website automatically detect your video card and download the appropriate driver. However, after I installed the new driver, I noticed that the version number was lower than my prior version. This worried me, so I then went to my PC’s Windows Update by right clicking my Desktop, choosing Properties / Settings / Advanced / Adaptor / Properties / Driver / Update Driver. Although I had done this before and received a message that my driver was up to date, this time it actually updated the driver. I think this is what corrected the problem.

I can now do neat functions like Rotate Canvas which comes in handy for painting with a Wacom tablet. And Image Toss, which might sound like some mere gimmick, but believe me, when you have an enormuos document and are zoomed in to some detail and you need to pan to another area of the image, the pan glides as effortlessly as an Olympic skater and there is no blocky redraw lag time, Yipeeeeee !!!

There is also a new handy shortcut in CS4, if you Hold down your mouse while pressing the “H” Key while you are on any other tool. While still holding down both, you can slide around to any area of the image, then when you release the mouse it zooms into that area of the image. Very quick and wonderful way to get around a large, zoomed in image.

I also finally see the 3D Axis Tool, which is the most efficient way to manipulate the X, Y, and Z movements and rotations. I was so happy and relieved when these features began working that I felt tears come to my eyes. I never realized how important they were to me until I saw my reaction when they magically appeared. I am one very happy Photoshopper today !!!

Hi Kaycee, It's been sooooo long since I've been around on deviantart, although it is, and will always be one of my favorite sites. I've been so busy putting together the lesson content for the Advanced Photoshop / Illustrator classes that I've been teaching. So rewarding and so much fun, but so much work that I rarely get away from my computer when I'm not teaching. And now with CS5 out, I have to quickly get up to speed on all the new features of the software.

How have you been? So nice to hear from you. I consider you to be a great friend, one of my first real friends when I first joined deviantart.

Hugs,

Gale

It's so good to hear from you I'm very glad all is well. I so wish I lived close enough to take your class it makes such a difference when you have a teacher who loves Photoshop as you do.
How are you liking CS5? I have CS4, do you think the updates are worth upgrading to 5?

I too consider you one of my favorite people and miss talking to you, also we all miss seeing your beautiful work. I often stop by your page to look at it again and again. Hopefully soon you'll find time to fit a little DA back into your life, although I completely understand how hard it can be!

Hi Kaycee,

I've not yet bought CS5 because I'm still teaching the class CS4. The school provides them with education version software and there is some lag time acquiring the licenses, etc., so they will be getting it in July. The new features in CS5 for Photoshop seem great, but not earth shattering, definitely time savers though. Especially the edge detection in Masking, but of course in the demos, Adobe always shows the technique on images that are ideal. If it does great edge detection on objects that are against a complex background then I will be truly impressed. ie: remember how Adobe showed off the Extraction Filter a few years back, as though it was the best innovation of the decade, then a few years later no longer includes it as part of the regular install (people have to manually install it) ... seems it's no longer their golden child, didn't work well on most images (however still works brilliantly on fur against an uncomplicated background) ... so I continue to install it manually.

Illustrator has some new tools that could be brilliant if they work as per the demonstration. The perspective grids (which seem much like Photoshop's Vanishing Point Filter) ... but hopefully it won't be as glitchy, it could be an enormous time saver and could be absolutely worth the upgrade if it works as advertised. Same with the varied stroke width which can add so much more dimension to art. Those could make it worth the upgrade.

I will likely upgrade by June or July. But in the meantime, I tell students that mastering older versions is still essential, knowing how to do detailed extractions, how to do manual masking, cloning, etc., are important because many companies do not upgrade their software as frequently as individual users, due to the cost of commercial licensing of the software, so if they get hired at a company using older versions, they will find themselves in an embarrassing situation if they are unable to do these things manually, the way it was done back in CS and CS2 before the amazing Mask Panel feature was added, etc.

Well, better get back to the class lesson planning ... :-)

Hugs,

Gale
