I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
grappling with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

- Mary Oliver

Here is a link to the original image I used for the body. It is from Sinned-angel-stock (their deviantart name): [link]

The face I made myself in Photoshop, merging various pieces and molded it into just the shape and facial expression that was required for this piece, using the now infamous Liquify tool.

I dedicate this graphic to Froggie, ( Frogmuseum2 ). He introduced me to this incredibly beautiful poem by Mary Oliver. The moment I heard it, I knew I wanted to make a graphic with this theme. I began last evening and finished this morning at 6 a.m., with no break in between, because this amazing poem inspired me.
Thank you Froggie.

The poem completely inspired me .... this may have been one of the easiest pieces to do for that reason .... ideas just kept coming, any time I began to feel stuck I would just reread the poem, and then ideas would just keep flowing like water. I was very happy about it !! :-D

Thank you much !!

Well I just love it, as I do all of your work. I am having a hard time with inspiration lately. I've been working flat out for the last couple of years, and just squeezing ni something here and there. I think I am burned out actually and that is why I am feeling a creative drain (don't do anything much to be inspired about, lol). Keep up the great work, looking forward to seeing what you come up with next :)

I also work full time, and usually find time at night for graphics, when I should really be sleeping. So there are days when I've had only 3 hours sleep, but it is worth it. Regarding inspiration, it can come from the most unexpected places .... ie: the way the sun is reflecting on a rooftop, in the kind words of a stranger, in something I hear on the news (even sometimes something very sad), in the contemplation of life's fleeting nature, about the unexpected turns that life takes, both good and bad ......... all these things can bring inspiration ... sometimes happy inspiration, and sometimes deep angst, which might inspire a graphic with a darker undertone. Just to be alive provides inspiration, no matter how routine our lives may be. Life is always throwing us curve balls. Every single tiny thing can be inspiration .... even the way the wind moves the leaves on the trees. Anyway, this is the way I look at things. Cheers !! - Gale
